I was born in Thunder Bay – a remote city in northwestern Ontario in the heart of the Canadian Shield. I left when I was 16, but the place has left a lasting impression on how I see the world and how I translate that vision into photography. I now live in Ottawa, Canada.
My work was chosen for an exhibition hosted by the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario entitled "Identity. Art Inspired by the Great Lakes." It opened in June 2015.
Watch West, a video montage of photographs of the American west.
Read my short essay "Life as a Photographer".
Watch a video about my book Houses of Worship.
My book Sweet Seas. Portraits of the Great Lakes was published in 2012. Canadian Geographic called "a remarkable study ... a visual tour of the delicate beauty and intense history of exploitation" around the Great Lakes. shelflifemag.com said "Mark Schacter was blessed with a perceptive eye ... that captures the Great Lakes in so many ways." Watch a video preview.
My book Roads was published in 2010. Reviewers said:
